Meet Randy & Riley
Mental health and substance use disorders can affect anyone at anytime. While some behavioral health conditions are genetic, many of them are brought on or worsened by stress and changes in our surroundings.
Randy’s* story is one of strength and perseverance, but also a testament to knowing when to ask for help.
A successful HVAC technician with a knack for customer service, Randy moved to Southwest Florida in 2015 for an opportunity in facilities management with a major hospitality chain.
In April of 2020, with the hospitality industry coming to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Randy’s position was eliminated and his world quickly started spinning out of control.
In the past, Randy struggled with alcohol use – but prior to 2020, he was sober for nearly 13 years. “When you’ve been sober for so long, you become increasingly confident that you can handle any situation without turning back to old habits, but this pandemic was too much,” said Randy.
The combination of losing his job, suddenly home-schooling Riley*, being unable to meet in person with his support group, and caring for his aging parents was more stress than Randy knew how to manage.
Thankfully, Randy quickly recognized that he needed help and turned to DLC. Our programs and counselors were able to work with both Randy and Riley to get them back on a healthy path.
Often times, our service areas cross paths. Mental health and substance use challenges don’t just affect the person struggling. In the case of Randy and Riley, our family counseling services and continued recovery and follow-up programs are helping them work through this together.
Continuing to serve those in our community like Randy and Riley is at the core of what we do. No one is ever turned away, regardless of ability to pay for services. These services can keep up with the demand only with your help.
Your support can change and save lives in our community.
There has never been a more critical time to give.
