DEPRESSION IS COMMON AND TREATABLE
Millions of Americans struggle with depression. At the David Lawrence Centers, the number one diagnosis for individuals seeking assistance is depression. Depressive disorders affect approximately 15% of adults and 8% of children. Antidepressants are the third most common prescription drugs taken by Americans of all ages and the most frequently used medication by people between the ages of 18 to 44.
Despite the prevalence of depression and the many effective interventions available that help people live a happy, healthy, productive daily life, as many as 50% of people suffering from depression never seek help and many lives are lost unnecessarily. In the State of Florida, every three hours a person commits suicide and it is the second leading cause of death for persons age 25-34. In 2009, more Floridians died of suicide than from homicides and HIV combined.
With education, outreach and awareness, more people suffering unnecessarily from depression can achieve life-changing wellness by seeking treatment.
